WHAT DID YAHSHUA MEAN WHEN HE SUMMARIZED THE LAW?

📖 Where Does This Teaching Come From?

📖 Matthew 22:36–40 (KJV)

“Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

🔍 Literal Explanation: What Does This Mean?

1. These Are Not New Commandments

Yahshua is quoting directly from the Torah:

  • 📖 Deuteronomy 6:5 (KJV)

“And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.”

  • 📖 Leviticus 19:18 (KJV)

“…but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the Lord.”

✅ Therefore, these two “commandments” are not new — they are summaries of the whole law.

2. “On these two hang all the law…” means:

They are the foundation and purpose behind every commandment — not a replacement.

📖 Romans 13:9–10 (KJV)

“For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill… and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.”

➤ Love is how we carry out the commandments — not avoid them.

🧾 How Do We Love Yah with All Our Heart, Soul, and Mind?

By keeping His commandments:

📖 John 14:15 (KJV)

“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”

📖 1 John 5:3 (KJV)

“For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.”

📖 Deuteronomy 11:1 (KJV)

“Therefore thou shalt love the Lord thy God, and keep his charge, and his statutes, and his judgments, and his commandments, alway.”

🧾 How Do We Love Our Neighbor as Ourselves?

By not sinning against them:

📖 Romans 13:8–10 (KJV)

“…he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law… Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal… Love worketh no ill to his neighbour…”

📖 Leviticus 19:11–18 (KJV)

“Ye shall not steal, neither deal falsely… Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer… Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart… but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself…”

➤ Loving your neighbor means you obey the laws that protect their well-being.

❌ False Doctrine Exposed:

“We only have to love God and love people now.”

This is deception — because Scripture never says to forget the rest of the commandments.

📖 Matthew 5:17–19 (KJV)

“Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil… Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments… shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven…”

✅ Final Summary:

Love CommandFulfills Which Law?
Love God with all heart, soul, mindSabbath, no idols, no other gods, reverencing His name, honoring Him
Love your neighbor as yourselfNo stealing, lying, murder, adultery, coveting, bearing false witness

📖 Ecclesiastes 12:13 (KJV)

“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.”
