Education at Yeshurun Farms is intended to accomplish more than preparing someone to pass an examination or obtain employment.

We believe education should prepare a person to think, work, build, produce, solve problems, serve others, and pass useful knowledge to the next generation.

For that reason, education and training are intended to become an integral part of community life.

The farm itself becomes a classroom.

The workshop becomes a classroom.

The greenhouse becomes a classroom.

And experienced members of the community become teachers.

Learning by Doing

Some things cannot be learned completely from a book or a computer screen.

A person can read about agriculture without knowing how to grow food.

They can study electricity without knowing how to troubleshoot a failed circuit.

They can watch someone repair an engine without knowing how to diagnose one themselves.

At Yeshurun Farms, classroom instruction can be combined with hands-on experience.

Students will have opportunities to learn a principle and then apply it to a real problem.

Plant it.

Build it.

Wire it.

Repair it.

Measure it.

Operate it.

Maintain it.

And eventually, teach someone else how to do it.

Agricultural Training

Agriculture will be one of the primary areas of practical education.

Yeshurun Farms should deliberately create opportunities for experienced people to teach younger generations.

Knowledge should not disappear.

It should be transferred.

Mentorship

Mentorship allows education to become personal.

Students can work alongside people experienced in particular fields.

Instead of simply being told how something works, students can observe how an experienced person approaches a problem.

Eventually the student moves from observing to assisting, from assisting to performing, and from performing to teaching.

That creates a cycle:

The Training Center

The long-term vision includes development of a dedicated training center on the property where students can participate in intensive hands-on instruction while living and working within the agricultural community.

The training center can combine classroom instruction with practical work throughout the property.

Students might begin the morning studying a subject and spend the afternoon applying it.

One day may involve agriculture.

Another may involve solar power.

Another may involve construction.

Another may involve water systems.

Another may involve business or technology.

The entire property becomes part of the training facility.

Residential Training

The planned residential training model can accommodate small groups rather than attempting to train hundreds of people at once.

A smaller program allows instructors and mentors to work directly with students.

Housing, meals, instruction, practical projects, and community responsibilities can be integrated into the experience.

Students are not simply visiting the farm.

For the duration of their training, they become participants in its daily operation.

They learn that community requires responsibility.

From Student to Teacher

The ultimate measurement of education is not simply what a student remembers.

It is what that student becomes capable of doing.

A successful student should eventually be able to take what was learned at Yeshurun Farms and reproduce it elsewhere.

Build another garden.

Establish another greenhouse.

Install another solar system.

Start another business.

Teach another child.

Train another farmer.

Help another family.

Strengthen another community.

The knowledge should multiply.

Biblical Education

Practical knowledge alone is not sufficient for the community we intend to build.

Our children and students must also understand the commandments, judgments, history, and instructions contained in Scripture.

Deuteronomy 6:6–7 (KJV)

“And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:

And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.”

The commandment does not describe instruction as something confined to a building or a particular hour.

Teaching occurs throughout life.

Biblical education at Yeshurun Farms should therefore be connected to conduct.

Students must learn that knowledge of YAH’s commandments carries the responsibility to obey them.

Deuteronomy 5:1 (KJV)

“And Moses called all Israel, and said unto them, Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your ears this day, that ye may learn them, and keep, and do them.”

The pattern is clear:

Hear them. Learn them. Keep them. Do them.

Preparing the Next Generation

Every generation inherits both opportunities and problems from the generation before it.

Our responsibility is to prepare the next generation better than we were prepared.

They should know how to grow food.

They should know how to conserve water.

They should understand electricity.

They should know how to use tools.

They should understand business.

They should understand technology.

They should know how to work with others.

They should know how to solve problems.

And above all, they should know the commandments of YAH and understand their responsibility to walk according to them.

Knowledge That Produces Independence

A person with useful knowledge carries something that cannot easily be taken away.

Land is valuable.

Equipment is valuable.

Buildings are valuable.

Money is valuable.

But without people who know what to do with those resources, their usefulness is limited.

Skills turn resources into capability.

Education and training therefore stand alongside water, food, energy, and shelter as essential components of a resilient community.

The objective of Yeshurun Farms is not merely to create a place where people can live.

It is to create a place where people can learn how to live, build, produce, serve, teach, and prepare the generation that comes after them.
