๐ Genesis 1:26 (KJV)
โAnd God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likenessโฆโ
๐ Literal Explanation: Who is โUsโ?
๐น 1. Scripture must interpret Scripture
The Bible never contradicts itself. So we must look at the next verse and other precepts to define โus.โ
๐ Genesis 1:27 (KJV)
โSo God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he himโฆโ
- There is no plural used in the action.
- โHeโ created โ not โthey.โ
- This shows the โusโ is not multiple gods or persons, because only one did the creating.
๐น 2. God Is One, Not Many
๐ Deuteronomy 6:4
โHear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord.โ
๐ Isaiah 44:24
โI am the Lord that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself.โ
โค God created by Himself โ there were no other persons assisting.
๐น 3. God Speaks to His Own Counsel (or Manifestations)
This is an example of God speaking within Himself โ similar to when He says:
๐ Isaiah 46:10
โMy counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure.โ
โค He refers to His own will, wisdom, Word, and Spirit โ not separate persons, but the facets of His own being.
๐ John 1:1
โIn the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.โ
๐ Ephesians 1:11
โโฆwho worketh all things after the counsel of his own will.โ
๐น 4. โUsโ Does Not Mean Trinity or Separate Persons
There is not a single verse in all of Scripture that says:
- God is three persons
- The Word or Spirit is a separate being
- Anyone besides God alone created man
๐ Malachi 2:10
โHave we not all one father? hath not one God created us?โ
๐ 1 Timothy 3:16
โGod was manifest in the fleshโฆโ โ not โone of the persons of Godโ
๐น 5. Possible Scriptural Explanations for โUsโ
Interpretation | Based On Scripture? | Notes |
---|---|---|
God talking to angels | โ No verse says angels created man | |
God talking to other persons in a Trinity | โ No verse says God is more than one person | |
God speaking to His own Word/Spirit | โ John 1:1, Isa. 46:10 | |
Plural of majesty (royal speech) | โ Supported by Gen. 1:27, Deut. 6:4, Isa. 44:24 |
โ Literal Conclusion (According to the Template)
- โUsโ in Genesis 1:26 is God speaking to or within His own counsel โ not to other divine persons.
- Only one God created man, and He did it alone (Isa. 44:24).
- The verse affirms Godโs complexity, not plurality of persons.
- Genesis 1:27 clears up the confusion: the Creator is one being who made man in His image.
๐ Isaiah 45:5
โI am the Lord, and there is none else, there is no God beside meโฆโ
