DAY OF ATONEMENT 2024

The Day of Atonement, or Yom Kippur, is one of the most solemn and sacred days in the Hebrew calendar. According to the Torah, it is observed on the 10th day of the 7th month (Tishrei) and is a day of fasting, repentance, and affliction of the soul before the Most High. The instructions for its observance can be found in Leviticus 16 and Leviticus 23:26-32.

Here is a breakdown of the literal rules for observing the Day of Atonement according to the scriptures:

 1. A Holy Convocation:

   – Leviticus 23:27 (KJV): “Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you…”

   – This means that it is a commanded assembly for worship and collective repentance. Congregations are to gather together to honor this holy day.

 2. Afflict Your Souls:

   – Leviticus 23:27 (KJV): “…and ye shall afflict your souls…”

   – The term “afflict your souls” has traditionally been interpreted as fasting, refraining from eating and drinking for a period of 24 hours. This is a day of humility and spiritual reflection.

   – Isaiah 58:5 and Psalm 35:13 indicate that afflicting the soul is closely associated with fasting.

 3. Offerings by Fire (Historical Context):

   – Leviticus 23:27 (KJV): “…and offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord.”

   – In the time of the Temple, specific offerings and sacrifices were made by the priests. These included a bull, two rams, and seven lambs without blemish, along with a sin offering of one goat (Leviticus 16:5-10).

   – Today, without a functioning Temple, most believers do not perform sacrifices. Instead, it is considered a time for spiritual offerings, such as prayer, repentance, and thanksgiving.

 4. No Work is Permitted:

   – Leviticus 23:28 (KJV): “And ye shall do no work in that same day: for it is a day of atonement, to make an atonement for you before the Lord your God.”

   – This is considered a Sabbath of complete rest, meaning no labor, business, or other work is to be done.

 5. The Duration of the Observance:

   – Leviticus 23:32 (KJV): “It shall be unto you a sabbath of rest, and ye shall afflict your souls: in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye celebrate your sabbath.”

   – The Day of Atonement is to be observed from sunset on the 9th day of the 7th month until sunset on the 10th day. This is a full 24-hour period, starting in the evening and ending the following evening.

 6. Making Atonement:

   – Leviticus 16:29-34 describes the purpose of the day as one of cleansing and making atonement for the people, the priests, and the sanctuary. The High Priest would enter the Most Holy Place to offer a blood sacrifice to atone for the sins of Israel.

   – Today, this day is used for personal and communal repentance, seeking reconciliation with the Most High, and reflecting on one’s relationship with God.

 7. No Marital Relations or Pleasures:

   – Affliction of the soul has been extended to mean not only refraining from food and drink but also from other pleasures, such as bathing, wearing perfumes, and engaging in marital relations.

 8. Refrain from Wearing Leather Shoes:

   – Traditionally, in observance of afflicting the soul, some choose not to wear leather shoes, opting instead for non-leather footwear as a sign of humility.

 9. Prayer and Repentance:

   – While this is not explicitly commanded in the Torah, the Day of Atonement is a time of extended prayer, seeking forgiveness, and reconciliation with God and others.

 Purpose of the Day:

The purpose of the Day of Atonement is to provide a time for deep introspection, repentance, and renewal of one’s commitment to living righteously before God. It’s a time to acknowledge sins, ask for forgiveness, and seek a clean slate before the Most High.

 Warnings:

   – Leviticus 23:29-30 (KJV): “For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day, he shall be cut off from among his people. And whatsoever soul it be that doeth any work in that same day, the same soul will I destroy from among his people.”

   – This passage shows the severity of breaking the observance by not afflicting oneself or by working. It was to be taken very seriously.

Observing the Day of Atonement today, without the Temple or animal sacrifices, involves focusing on repentance, prayer, fasting, and gathering together in holy assembly. It’s a time to align oneself with God’s commands and seek spiritual renewal for the year ahead.

We will be doing a food and drink fast  from 7 PM CST 11 Oct 2024 Until 7 PM CST 12 Oct 2024.
